A Place for Everything

College sports have generated a lot of heat off, as well as on, the playing field in recent years. Many

players feel that they are exploited by colleges and universities that require extremely hard work and

exhausting schedules of their athletes, while at the same time treating them as second class citizens?as

academic underachievers who are allowed to take part in college life only because they make big money

for their schools. Others feel that sports have become far too important and need to be downplayed to

restore balance to college campuses. One creative proposal has been to declare Performance of Sport a

major, with courses in the ethics of sport, the history of sport, sport and finance, and so on, thereby

making sport an integral part of the school?s academic mission. Athletes who major in sport would earn

college credit for their hard work on the field. The idea is innovative and attractive, but it requires further

thought. Would it really be wise to declare sport a major? To answer that question, several others need

to be addressed:

1. Is declaring that sport should be a major by comparing it to a performing art such as dance or drama

legitimate?

A. Yes: there are significant similarities between the requirements and the learning that go on

in both cases. Both require self-discipline, creative critical thinking and involve a body of

knowledge, a history and theory.

B. No: Sport is a game, an end in itself with no further goal. Performance arts are interpretive

acts. Rather than being entertainment, with no further purpose, they leave the audience

making meaning of them through reflection, thus broadening their own understanding.

2. Is it right to give college credit for practice and performances at games?

A. Yes: we give students credit now for fieldwork and community service. All credit does not

necessarily have to be earned in a classroom.

B. No: There is a difference between learning about one?s future career hands-on and practicing

to compete in a game.

3. Would declaring sport a major restore the balance between entertainment and academic pursuits?

A. Yes: Sport would take its proper place as an academic recognized pursuit.

B. No: Sport would become a pseudo-science and even further distort the needed balance

between entertainment and academic pursuits.
